Vision and Hearing Screening Requirements

1. Illinois Schools and Preschools 

Did you know that children that are in a Licensed Preschool program ages 3-5 have to have both a vision and a hearing screening. It is required by the State of Illinois for your licensing requirements.

* Vision Screenings are required annually for students in Pre-K, 2nd, and 8th Grades.
* Hearing Screenings are required annually for students in Pre-K, K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grades.
*Both Vision and hearing screenings are required for students who are new to the district, students being evaluated for an Individualized Education Program (IEP), and students with a 504 Plan or IEP. 
 

1. Head Start Early Childhood Classroom:
   
   • Students must receive vision and hearing screening within 45 days of the first day of attendance.
   • The specifics of how these screenings are conducted may vary depending on the program's guidelines or state regulations.

1. Early Head Start:
   
   • For children aged 12 months up to 3 years old:
     • Vision screening is conducted using a Spot Screener within 45 days of enrollment.
     • Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) screening is required for children aged birth up to 3 years old within 45 days of enrollment.
